Buyer Guides
Plain answers to the questions buyers ask before choosing CCTV equipment.
DVR or NVR? Choosing a CCTV Recorder
Choose a recorder by the cameras it records. A DVR records cameras on coaxial cable, an NVR records IP cameras over a network, and enterprise video storage records up to 512 IP cameras on one unit, on RAID-protected drives.
Upgrading Analog CCTV to HD Over Coax
Usually you can keep the coaxial cable and replace only the cameras and the recorder. HD-over-coax cameras send high-definition video down the existing cable to a hybrid HD DVR, which also records any analog cameras you keep and IP cameras you add.
PoE Switches and CCTV Cable Distance
A standard Ethernet copper run, PoE included, reaches 100 m. Videoline's PoE switches stretch that to 250 m in Extend mode, at 10 Mbps, and the MC7100-10C media converter carries the network over fiber for up to 120 km.
